Eating oysters in a field in Alabama.
I am a recent grad from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. In 2007, I packed my bags and headed from the Windy city to Birmingham, AL where I formerly worked for Cooking Light and Southern Living magazines as an intern and travel writer respectively. In addition to work published there, my articles have appeared in St. George Magazine, Salt Lake Magazine, Consumer Health Magazine and Elan Woman.
Though I’m a self-professed print junkie I’m excited to see how the web continues to change this industry. I’ve also contributed to ebonyjet.com as well as atyourlibrary.org.
In addition to freelancing, I teach sunrise and sunset yoga classes as a volunteer at the Jones Valley Urban Farm and Green Resource Center of Alabama. Swatting mosquitos and blinking back the sun can be a real test to meditation, but there’s nothing like coming into a pose and feeling completely connected with the abundance that’s around. When I’m lucky, the farmers send me home with a few leftovers from harvest which I experiment with in my kitchen.
I love cooking and since I’ve moved to the south, trying to eat healthy. I have succumb on occasion to ribs from Dreamland or a helping of mac ‘n cheese from Niki’s West (here, it’s considered a vegetable), but when I dine at home it’s usually big salads, crazy juice concoctions, and pastries to satisfy my insatiable sweet tooth — see blog.
