ritual acts of care
Through ritual, we can cut through the hazy confusion of the colonialist-imperialist-white-supremacist-capitalist patriarchy. We hear, see, smell, taste, feel, and trust the life-giving, ancestral wisdoms that have lain dormant in our bones. —Decolonizing the Body
Today the moon is full. How are these moonbeams landing on you? It's not uncommon to feel activated or overcome with emotion under this lunation. If you're riding these waves, I send the reminder that sometimes just feeling for a minute or two is the bravest thing one can do.
Can you be with whatever is arising in your body without making it wrong? Maybe call on the support of that which is bigger than you (the earth, ancestors, spirit) to help you in this holding. If it feels right, lay down on the earth, light a candle, place your hand on your heart, or ask for the support of a loved one. All of this is ritual, and as the profound teacher Malidoma Somé reminds us, “ritual is called for because our soul communicates things to us that the body translates as need, or want, or absence. So we enter into ritual in order to respond to the call of the soul.”
Though the practices need not be complex, making the time to engage in ritual acts of care is not simple. In our hustle and bustle world amid our very full lives, this is big work that makes even bigger ripples.
And while it's important that we cultivate these practices for ourselves, we can only do so much alone. We reach new layers of healing when we engage in ritual alongside others.
This is why I've been inspired to make ritual the central focus of the Embodied Book Study gathering launching later this month. ✨🌱🐍🌕
